Huntington Ingalls - Newport News Shipbuilding and the City of Newport News have collaborated on a walking trail in downtown Newport News to enable employees and the public to have a route for outdoor exercise. The trail takes the walkers through downtown Newport News to the Victory Arch and around the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC). As I walked past these signposts, I felt this was screaming for a cache series in this sparsely cache populated area. Due to geocache personal space limitations, not every 0.1 mile spaces signed will have an associated cache container, but I did what I could.
Enjoy the walk and the series.
Based on personal observations on parking availability and muggle density in this downtown area, I recommend that the best time to find these caches is after 5 pm (M-F) or on weekends. To help in finding a good parking place during weekday searches, I have provided coordinates to a convenient parking spot for a small hourly fee, and this series should take less than an hour to complete.
This cache is the farthest away from the nearest trail signpost, but there was a lack of good hiding spots closer. Be careful crossing the street, and muggle vehicles should help with stealth cover.
The actual milepost trail sign is at the corner of 23rd and West Ave, closest to VASCIC.
