Christians have worshipped on this site since 653 AD, when Elfleda introduced Christianity to the kingdom of Mercia at Repton, by bringing four monks from Lindisfarne. Originally there was an abbey built on the sites of St Wystan's and the public school, housing a double monastery of both monks and nuns. Repton crypt was built during the first half of the 8th century, before being converted into a mausoleum circa mid 750 AD, possibly for the burial of murdered King Aethelbald of Mercia. During the Viking winter encampment of 873 AD, the abbey was destroyed to create a fortified camp, with the church as its stronghold. Over 250 Viking burials have been discovered within the church and vicarage grounds.
