Geocache Description:

Legend has it that the well was formed at St. Colmcille's command; it may have been the reason for the founding of the original Dún of Ceannanas. Needless to say, the water from this well has magical powers.

This ancient, hidden well is about 200 metres from the R163 out of Kells, at the end of what was, until recently, an overgrown and almost inaccessible lane.

It has been restored in recent years to its oldest known layout by the local archaeological society. The lane can be muddy after wet weather, and there are a couple of relatively steep sections, but could be managed by younger children with some assistance.

If you look over the wall to your left at the bottom of the lane, you will see what looks like an ordinary field. What you are looking at is in fact the Corcach Comhréidh, what was once a lake (complete with crannóg), and then a marshland. It was in this marsh that the Book of Kells was found after having been stolen in 1007AD. Bhí clúdach an leabhair lena mhiotal agus a seoda luachmhara bainte de. Bhí an chuid ba luachmhara, an leabhair é féin, fágtha acu áfach.

There is parking space for a few cars across the road from the trailhead.
