Geocache Description:

A beaches tour wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Main Street Beach in Vermilion next to the former Inland Seas Maritime Museum. This is one of the gathering places to see Lake Erie during all weather conditions and to view some great sunsets. Hopefully, after finding the cache you can spend a couple of minutes gazing across the lake. From here, it’s just about 50 miles to Canada, that’s quite a swim.

Cache is placed with permission.

This is the site of the former Inland Seas Maritime Museum. In 1953, Commodore Albert Wakefield donated his home overlooking Lake Erie to Bowling Green State University. BGSU then leased the building to the Great Lakes Historical Society as the permanent home for the museum. In 1992, a replica of the iron 1877 Vermilion Lighthouse was erected on the property, exactly where Commodore Wakefield had wanted to put it when the original 1877 lighthouse was dismantled. The replica lighthouse has become a landmark of Vermilion's rich nautical heritage. The Great Lakes Historical Society relocated the museum to Toledo in 2013 and the City of Vermilion purchased the property.
