Whitfield Valley Local Nature Reserve covers a large area in Norton and Bradeley. The Ford Green Reed Bed at the south end of the site is one of Stoke-on-Trent’s two Sites of Special Scientific Interest. It has been designated because large numbers of swallows gather here before leaving the country at the end of the summer. Whitfield Valley has a great range of habitats and is home to a wide range of plant and animal species. Whitfield Valley boasts a wide range of habitats including ponds and streams, grassland and heathland. The diversity of habitats means there are lots of plants and animals including herons, sticklebacks and kestrels. Parts of the grassland have yellow rattle plants which indicates that the area has been unchanged for a long time.
The surface of the bicycle track from Sneyd Green to the A527 Chatterley Whitfield cycle / foot bridge is suitable for pushchairs, strollers, bicycles and wheelchairs. Caches have been located on the cycle track or within a few steps of it
