Geocache Description:

Aberfeldy is a small town on Mount Lookout, northeast of Lake Thomson, 125 kilometres east of Melbourne in Victoria at approximately 1000m above sea level. With fantastic views across the hills, you are sure to see something new each time you come up here.

The area was settled in 1871 following the discovery of gold, but today, only a few permanent residents remain.

The first Post Office opened on 1 January 1872 but later closed in 1967.

The town was surveyed and proclaimed in 1885. It was initially known as Mount Lookout but was eventually renamed after the Scottish town of Aberfeldy. At its peak, the township had a population of around 500. After the gold rush the town was used for sheep and cattle grazing and for the production of potatoes and other crops.

Unfortunately, much of the area was destroyed by fire in January 2013 and was the worst of the bushfire season. It destroyed 21 houses and more than 85,000 hectares and claimed the life of one resident who died trying to flee the blaze as it tore through Seaton.

But after fire follows much natural beauty with the constant regeneration of the bushland.

** You may wish to save this cache in your offline list prior to visiting as mobile service is not always good at GZ.

Whilst the road is easily accessible by conventional 2wd vehicle, the road can be a little bumpy.

This cache should be a quick find as there aren't too many stealthy places to hide it close by. You will be looking for a disguised Eclipse mints container containing a swap and a log book (BYO pen). You can park close by without any problems.

Please replace the cache where you found it and ensure it is covered back up.

Good luck!
