Welcome to the Borough of New Cumberland, PA. This is a little borough with a big history. Originally named Shawneetown in 1689, after a few more name changes, in 1827 the US Post Office officially changed the name to New Cumberland. The most prominent New Cumberland resident was John White Geary, governor of Pennsylvania 1867 - 1873. He was a colorful and adventurous soldier-politician. Major Marcus Reno, a controversial figure in the Custer Massacre, owned a farm which is now part of the Borough. Both men are remembered by avenues named for them, and by Geary's home site on Market Square.*
In 1845, the town numbered forty dwellings, four stores, two churches, one tavern, two saw mills, a pump factory, a flour mill, and more than three hundred residents. As of 2010, there were 7,277 residents. It has a small town atmosphere with many interesting family-owned shops and restaurants, a new elementary school, a middle school, a library in a beautiful historic building, and many parks scattered throughout.*
* this information and much more can be found on the New Cumberland Burough website
We live in this cute little town and wanted to make it better known on the Geocaching Map. The caches are hidden around the town. Depending which end you begin, you'll travel down (or up) Bridge Street, stopping at places that make up the heart of New Cumberland. We are grateful these people allowed us to place caches on their properties for the geocaching community, and expect the utmost respect while retrieving the caches. Every cache in the "Our Little Towne" series is there with the property owner's permission. Stop in and say "Hi! Just grabbing the cache!" and they'll all know what you're talking about.
CUP OF JOE
This cache is either the first in New Cumberland you'll grab or the last, depending which direction you started. This is a family-friendly cache with a camoed lock & lock container. Park in the back, and look for the tree. We've started out with swag for the kids to trade. If you take something, please replace with something else so everyone has the same experience. There is a pen with the log book, so please put the pen and log book back in the baggie to help keep it dry. A cute TB we picked up a few days ago is looking for a traveller. NO CACHING AFTER DARK PLEASE!
