King Robert's great charter of 1319, allowed the citizens of Aberdeen to own the Burgh, the forests and all the revenue from the land within the borders. The revenue from the Freedom Lands is known as "The Common Good Fund".
The inner CR (City Royal) March Stones mark the boundary of a series of crofts and croft lands that ringed the Medieval Royal Burgh of Aberdeen. This CR stone is located on Jacks Brae near the course of the Denburn.
The Denburn originates in Kingswells and runs mainly underground through the city to the upper dock of Aberdeen Harbour.
In years gone by looking down from where Union Bridge is now would have been very different. The view down into the Denburn valley would have been of a wide river and a 100 acres loch where wild boar, wolves and bears were hunted.
The Denburn is probably where Aberdeen took its name. ‘Aberden’ meaning the mouth of the Den.
