Geocache Description:

Started as a driveable multicache on the former jet runway in 2002.

Version 8 is a magnetic micro beside an old base building near the former Version 5. The long-lived Version 5, a box in a waterside concrete vault, was destroyed for redevelopment. Earliest versions were multi's featuring a "drive on the runway" (now forbidden). That wide, long runway was a good place for my 15 year old to practice driving, back in the day. You used to be able to slip on to the runway at Bladium Sports, and have fun zooming down the center line at 50 mph.

History… Alameda was previously the Pan American "China Clipper" seaplane harbor on the US West Coast. The US Navy commissioned a base for seaplanes and two aircraft carriers in 1940. Across the basin today are Ready Reserve ships at Pier 2 and the USS Hornet CV-12 at Pier 3.

The Hornet (1941) CV-8 carried Doolittle’s Raiders from Alameda, with B-25 bombers to attack the capital of Japan 4 months after Pearl Harbor. The Hornet (1943) CV-12 collected the first two Apollo moon spacecraft. See http://www.uss-hornet.org

PS: This cache is dedicated to high school teammate and friend Bill Donohue, who served on the aircraft carrier Coral Sea when it was berthed here.
