Football Micro Series 042 - Chester FC Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kelsborrow Wayfinders: The area around the cache has been cut back and it really needs a better hiding place so I think I will archive this and perhaps bring it back in another form.

Geocache Description:

As someone who does a lot of geocaching while following Chester FC around the country I thought it would be a good idea to set up a cache for away supporters visiting the Deva Stadium. This straightforward multi can be quickly completed before kick-off as the final stage is close to the ground. It should only take about 10-15 minutes.

12/10/18 - The cache has been renamed to integrate it into the new Football Micros Series - see end of listing for further details

The original Chester football club was formed in 1885 as an amalgamation of Chester Rovers and King's School Old Boys. In 2010 the club folded but immediately reformed as Chester FC and three promotions in three seasons took them back to the Conference. A condensed history of the club can be found at: Chester FC Brief History but for anyone who wants to learn more I can highly recommend the book 125 Years On The Borderline - The Complete History of Chester City Football Club 1885 - 2010. But then I would recommend it for obvious reasons.

Chester's original ground was in Faulkner Street in Hoole where they played until 1898. Building work forced the club to move the short distance to the Old Showground for one season before they temporarily disbanded. In 1901 they found a new ground in Whipcord Lane and then moved to the much-loved Sealand Road ground in 1906. That ground is now covered by the Greyhound Retail Park and you will have passed it on the way here as it was situated by the traffic lights at the end of Bumpers Lane where Tesco Homebase is now located.

The ground was controversially sold in 1990 and after two years in exile in Macclesfield the club moved into the Deva Stadium in 1992. A lot has been said and written about the location of the ground in relation to the England/Wales border but to clarify the situation, the border does not run along the halfway line or the touchline. Most of the ground itself is in Wales but a small sliver is in England.

If you are standing in front of the plaque the border passes between the yellow door to your right and the office window so you are (just) standing in Wales.

For the cache itself you need to get information from the board relating to the plaque that came from the old Sealand Road ground. Although the plaque is accessible at all times I would not recommend doing this at night unless there is a match on.

The cache can be found at:

N53 1A.BCD W002 5E.FGH

where:

A = Year in which Chester were elected into the Football League 193A

B = Amount of money handed over by the Supporters' Committee £B,000

C = Most of the development on the Sealand Road stadium took place between 193C and 1935

D = Number of letters in the first of the four words on the yellow door directly to your right when facing the plaque

E = The plaque remained in place for more than E0 years

F = Restoration work started on the plaque in February 201F

G = Looking at the bricks to your right which column does the name Derek Evans appear in (reading from the left). Column number = G

H = Number of letters in the first of the three words above the yellow door directly to your left when facing the plaque

The cache itself is a screw top container. Please replace carefully.
