In common usage, Walkabout refers to the aboriginal custom where a man breaks off from the daily grind and walks in solitude across desert and bush country on a spiritual quest. The distance covered on a walkabout may exceed 1000 miles, done without aid of compass, gps or radio. The walker finds his way, it is believed, under the guidance of a spiritual power.
You are looking for the "Stillman Outback Trail" which encompasses the entire west side of the Cold Spring Laboratories in Laurel Hollow. This trail was named after Dr. Bruce Stillman, who is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is a native of Australia.
Directions: The Stillman Outback Trail is located north of Route 25A, between Moores Head Road and the western access road that runs north/south through the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Across from the fish hatchery you’ll find Bungtown Road. Turn north on Bungtown and make your 1st left and you'll see an auditorium and reception center. If you want to take a long “Walkabout”, then park here and walk uphill to the left and you will see a trail-head with an overhead sign showing the beginning of the trail. If you don't have time to enjoy the trails, the shortest route to the cache (by foot) is to park a bit downhill from the bridge, then walk down under the bridge and then go directly west of the bridge to the trail-head located at: N 40 51.631, W 73 28.248. After about 100 feet, turn right and take the trail uphill to the cache. (if you come to a road, you missed the trail to your right)
Please put cache holder back vertically, the way you found it, so it won't just fall down ... thanks!
