This cache marks Streight's last ambush of the day on Forrest's Cavalry by the Federal raiders who had been hotly pursude and closely harrased all day by Forrest. Creek crossings were always clumsey at best when pulling artillery and wagons, so they made an obvious choice for Streight's rear guard to wait for the head of Forrest's riders and ambush them in the dark to delay Forrest's pursuit. While getting this cache look at the creek & imagine it without the bridge, the fording of horses, men and wagons in the middle of a moonlight night. Col' Streight's words of this engagement:
"I again succeeded in ambushing them, which caused them to give up the pursuit for the night. We continued our march, and reached Blountsville about 10 o'clock in the morning. Many of our mules had given out, leaving their riders on foot, but there was very little straggling behind the rear guard."
