Stazione Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella Railway Station is used by 59 million people every year and is one of the busiest in Italy, at the northern end of the Florence–Rome direttissima and the southern end of the Bologna–Florence Direttissima. A new high speed line to Bologna opened on 13 December 2009. The station is also used by regional trains on lines connecting to Pisa, Livorno, Lucca, Viareggio, Bologna and Faenza. It was designed in 1932 by a group of architects known as Gruppo Toscano (Tuscan Group) including Giovanni Michelucci and Italo Gamberini. The plan of the main building, as seen from above, looks as if it were based on the fascio littorio, the symbol of Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party: actually that shape was forced by the shape of the area and the pre-existing station. The building is one of the key works of Italian Modernism, but has little to do with the Italian Rationalism movement, being more strongly influenced by the Viennese architecture of Loos and Hoffman; but it is the building's originality that makes it outstanding. Il fabbricato principale fu progettato all'inizio degli anni trenta da una squadra di architetti detta “Gruppo Toscano”, guidata da Giovanni Michelucci. La stazione è considerata uno dei capolavori del razionalismo italiano: la struttura dell'opera riflette pienamente la sua funzione. Sebbene l'opera non fosse in linea con le tendenze architettoniche improntate al trionfalismo di stampo fascista, l'opera ricevette il plauso dello stesso Mussolini, anche perché, per puro caso, se vista dall’alto, aveva una forma simile a quella del fascio littorio. Al binario 8 una targa ricorda il treno che l’8 marzo 1944, durante la seconda guerra mondiale, partì da qui carico di oltre mille deportati ebrei destinati ai campi di concentramento nazisti.
