An American whaler named Mayhew Folger of the Topaz discovered the presence, in 1808, of the remaining Bounty mutineers, their wives and families on Pitcairn Island. After arriving in Norfolk Island in 1856, the American whalers helped the Norfolk Islanders start their own whaling operations
Whaling was revived in 1956 when the Norfolk Island Whaling Company secured a quota for 150 whales and large processing factory was built at Cascade Bay. Several successful seasons followed until 1962 when there was dearth of whales in local waters. The station suspended operations after several weeks hunting by the chaser boats had only captured four whales. Over the next few years the whaling station was gradually demolished. All that remains today is the digester.
