Stone walls are a feature of Whitby. This background information comes from a promotional book published by the Whitby Consortium in 1998. “Part of Whitby’s uniqueness was created by stonemason Frank Janse who built stonework of high quality. Frank emigrated to New Zealand from Holland, having learned his trade from his father. The results are to be seen not only in the public areas such as the lakes, parks, roadways and culvert headwalls but also in many private gardens. He was also responsible for the stone walls on the Thorndon section of the Wellington motorway. Frank Janse died in 1988 but his beautifully crafted stonework will be enjoyed by many generations of Whitby residents.” This is a very pleasant little area of the Whitby Lake, and a tribute to Frank's work. Update 12 November 2016: The cache is well-camoed and contains only a log book. It takes a completely different form from the last one (so previous finders’ logs may not apply) but it is in exactly the same location. It is well out of sight and therefore a little more difficult than before, but can be located by feeling around upwards and unscrewing. Please take the time to replace it carefully. While I love that geocaching can be shared by the family, please think very carefully about showing this one to kids. Because of the popular and easily accessed location the previous cache was very regularly muggled by geochildren and/or the friends they had shown. Please emphasise to geochildren that caches do not need revisiting and should not be shown to others.
