If you feel like climbing Mount Tampa without using the cable car, you can choose one of five known routes: Gabony’s Steps - easy difficulty trail, located on the Eastern side of the mountain, the curvy road beneath the cable car, the forest road running from Valley City - Răcădău, the saddle, or Knights’ Road.
Gabony's Steps are easy to find easy after by the arrows or markings painted on rocks and trees (yellow triangle with white sides). You climb from the Dobrogeanu Gherea street or from the Tampa promenade (end of Star store).
Gabony's Steps were dug into the rock in 1931 Due to the advanced state of decay (the route had become dangerous) steps, railings and pillars were completely redone in 2008. Initially thought to be 121 steps, but after works emerged 167. The route features several stops with tables and wooden benches.
On the trail Gabony’s steps may be encountered several protected plant and animal species, habitats listed in the Habitats Directive of the European Union: liverwort, first described scientifically by the observations on Tampa mountain, forest lily, rare rock ferns, head of the serpent, Iris, variegated tulip, crown bushes flowering ash, brown kite, harrier gray, speckled woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker, wild cat. The total area of the protected area is 188.9 hectares.
It will take you about 60 minutes climb from the base path to the meadow on the south-east of Tampa and another 20 minutes to the cable car. The view is great: on one side the city, Barsa plains, Persani and Baraolt mountains and to the South Piatra Mare, Postavarul, Ciucas mountains.

Traseul Treptele lui Gabony îl găseşti uşor după săgeţile indicatoare sau marcajele cu vopsea pe stânci şi copaci (un triunghi galben cu laturile albe). Poţi urca dinspre strada Dobrogeanu Gherea sau de pe promenada Tâmpei (capătul spre magazinul Star).
Treptele lui Gabony au fost săpate în stâncă în anul 1931. Datorită stării avansate de degradare (traseul devenise deja periculos) treptele, balustradele şi stâlpii de susţinere s-au refăcut complet în 2008. Inițial se credea că sunt 121 de trepte, dar în urma lucrărilor au reieșit 167.Pe traseu sunt amenajate câteva popasuri cu mese şi bănci din lemn.
Pe traseul Treptele lui Gabony pot fi întîlnite mai multe specii de plante şi animale protejate, în habitate incluse în Directiva Habitate a Uniunii Europene: Crucea-voinicului, descrisă pentru prima dată ştiinţific în urma observaţiilor pe muntele Tîmpa, crinul de pădure, specii rare de ferigi de stîncă, capul şarpelui, stînjenelul, laleaua pestriţă, cununiţă, tufişuri de mojdrean, gaia brună, eretele sur, ciocănitoarea pestriţă, ciocănitoarea cu trei degete, pisică sălbatică. Suprafaţa totală a ariei protejate muntele Tîmpa este de 188,9 hectare.
Faci cam 60 de minute, urcat lejer, de la baza traseului până la pajiştea de pe versantul sud-estic al Tâmpei (rezervaţie floristică) şi încă 20 de minute până la telecabină. Priveliştea este deosebită: pe de o parte oraşul Braşov, şesul Ţării Bârsei, munţii Perşani şi Baraolt iar spre sud Piatra Mare, Postăvarul, Ciucaşul.
