Figure 1
Nestled in between the hustle and bustle of Randburg is a sanctuary for people and their feathered friends. The President Ridge Bird Sanctuary is one of Randburg’s best kept secrets. The area consisted of a dam used to wash sand for use in Durao’s sand mine and a fringe of dry land surrounding the dam with exotica and willow trees.
The land belonged to Randburg municipality but the need to wash sand had fallen away with the development of the Water Front and the local authority was investigating the possibility of making the area a public park or something similar. It was then when the bird sanctuary was born.
Access on weekends and holidays was and still is, facilitated by a team of volunteers who open the gate and hide early in the morning and close later in the afternoon.
More than 123 species of birds have been spotted in the sanctuary which is a huge attraction for bird lovers.
