[ENG] Villanova is one of four historic districts of Cagliari, founded in the thirteenth century at the foot of the ancient "Castello" (Castle) district. The first inhabitants of the area were the peasants of the "Campidano" plains, who had relations and business with the city. The Villanova district born when these farmers decided to settle closer to Cagliari. Until the early decades of the twentieth century there were still many orchards and vineyards.
The old part of the district is formed by simple dwellings of one or two floors, several churches and a number of shops. Recently it became the center of refined and elegant shops and numerous stylish and trendy locals. In Villanova are located the two major archconfraternities engaged in the rites of Holy Week in Cagliari.

[ITA] Villanova è uno dei quattro quartieri storici di Cagliari, fondato nel XIII secolo ai piedi del quartiere "Castello". I primi abitanti del quartiere furono i contadini del Campidano che intrattenevano relazioni commerciali con la città. Villanova nacque quando questi contadini decisero di stabilirsi più vicini a Cagliari. Fino ai primi decenni del XX secolo erano presenti ancora numerosi orti e vigne.
La parte vecchia del quartiere si presenta con semplici abitazioni su uno o due piani, diverse chiese e numerose botteghe. Recentemente sta diventando centro di negozi raffinati ed eleganti e di numerosi locali eleganti e di tendenza. Villanova è sede di due importanti arciconfraternite, impegnate in maniera particolare nei riti della Settimana Santa cagliaritana.
