New Hanover is a small, seemingly insignificant, village (not even named on geocaching maps) situated halfway between Pietermaritzburg and Greytown on the R33.
It comprises a Magistrates Court, Prison, a smattering of shops typical of such a village, a Petrol Filling station and very little else. There was a hotel, which has become a B&B and the local pub. This old German settlement has in recent times had a primary school, clinic, and modern Provincial District Government offices added.
For over 25 years the CO of this cache has been involved in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre that also occupies land in the village. A few years back, a rather mischievous individual had completed his treatment programme in the centre, his equally mischievous brother came to pick him up early in the evening, in his motor car, for the trip back home to the South Coast. On that particular morning all of the signs into the village read "New Hanover". However the following morning the sign, on the route taken by the mischievous brothers, now read "New Hangover". Guilt was never established, and when questioned about this incident, the brothers professed their innocence. To this day the mysterious graffiti sign writers remain unknown.............?...............?..............?
It took the Provincial authorities over 6 months before they restored the "dignity" of New Hanover by removing the sign. It has all been long forgotten until the CO found the photo that brought this incident flooding back into memory.
Just so that it continues to remain an integral part of the history of New Hangover , (oops - sorry typing slip), New Hanover, this cache has been placed.
WP 1 for this one stage multi cache is at the same spot where the original "New Hangover" traditional cache was placed. However due to the container being muggled on number of occasions, this new multi has been published. All you will find at WP1 are the co-ordinates for the final. No puzzles! No arithmetic! No deciphering of figures! No strange pictures to interpret! Just the go-ahead to the final.... ENJOY !
