When we first saw this we were a taken back by it's creepiness. We could see that someone went to a lot of work to create this and we were wondering why it was there. At first we thought it was some type of memorial or burial practice but it did look a little cultish.
We contacted the Town of Ryley to find out what the meaning was. If you didn't know Ryley is the site of two very large landfill sites. I was aware of these landfills as we sent waste there from the plant I worked in but I wasn't aware of the scale. These things are huge. Some, if not all, of Edmonton's garbage ends up here. The area was chosen because of the particular clay base which didn't allow permeation by any toxic liquid that might ooze out of the refuse, and it doesn't have an underlying aquifer to contaminate.
To the east of the picture you will see the mound formed from one of the land fill sites. Apparently these sites have the capacity to hold 300 BILLION metric tonnes of trash, which was calculated to be the trash from all of North America for the next 1000 years. Residents of the area have complained about the dust, noise, smell, seagulls and stuff blowing around. This property owner lives in close proximity to one of the landfills. This was his way to protest and get his message out that the landfills will kill you and your livestock.
