Geocache Description:

Be sure to wear shoes, once the road runs out you will be on some very HOT sand! Approx 1/2 mile hike. Do not allow the kids to swim or wade here. Very steep drop offs and dangerous currents! Watch for dolphins, they come very close to shore here!

Work on the present Morris Island Light started in 1872, it was illuminated on October 1, 1876. Built of brick it is 33 feet in diameter at the base, weighs more thatn 3200 tons, is built on 264 piles and rises 161 feet above sea level making her one of the tallest light houses in the world. She was originally black and white as are all of the light-houses in the Carolinas but time has caused the black paint to oxidize and that is why it appears to be rust and white. From the direction you will be coming uou wil notice her slight list to the right. At one time there was a three story house and other out buildings that stood with her but erosion took it's toll and the house was dismantled and taken by barge where it was reassembled into two homes. In 1938 the light was fully automated but as the shipping channels changed so did the need for a new light house. In 1962 the light on Morris Island was extinguised and the new light on Sullivan's Island was lit. The first order Fresnel lens was removed from Morris Island and can be seen in a small museum at the bottom of the Hunting Island Light House.(Also a cache site) Since then she has sat alone with the dolphins and the sea, quietly waiting for rescue. Maybe, "Some Day Her Prince Will Come". Beginning in 1999 "Save the Light" Inc. holds a 99 year lease to raise funds for stabilization, erosion control and restoration of the Morris Island Light, one of the oldest Light Houses in the world.

This is a lovely place for solice and solitude and in 2003 she was part of the Spoleto Festival. She was clothed in colored light until June 9th. You can make a donation to "Save the Light" .org by visiting their web-site. Enjoy this incredible sight.
