Nestled within the concrete grid of The Lower East Side lies Sara Delano Roosevelt Park, named after the mother of our 32nd President. Originally intended for residential use, this stretch of land found itself instead dedicated to outdoor activity and has remained as such for more than half a century appealing to a wide range of attendees, young and old alike. Here you will find community centers, soccer fields, basketball courts, and one lone area of park that stands out from the rest. Due to its unique features it has been unofficially dubbed “The Pit” by some who frequent the space. It is a sunken section of pavement lined with brick walls on three sides. Benches surround the area allowing visitors to relax and witness the activities that take place within – Tai Chi, dance, local events and the unusual sport that is known as bicycle polo.
At the far end of The Pit is the Wah Mei bird garden. Owners of these exotic birds gather in the morning to let these beautiful creatures fraternize and sing. It is maintained by the community much like every other part of the park. Rumors abound that a stretch of the infamous LOMEX conceived by Robert Moses lie underground nearby – an unfinished bit of roadwork now forgotten, unused and buried under Manhattan like so many other subterranean gems in a city layered with decades of history.
BYOP. Cache is located within the park, but not inside The Pit or within the bird garden. note: coords may seem a bit jumpy, but on certain maps point right to GZ. Easy access. FTF gets a neat little prize to pass on. Use stealth.
