Hannah Hauxwell was born in Baldersdale on 1 August 1926 at the family farm, Low Birk Hatt, an 80 acre farm on the edge of Blackton Reservoir which is now an SSSI and nature reserve. This true daughter of the Dale, ran the farm by herself following the death of her uncle and parents. There was no electricity or running water and life was a constant battle against poverty and hardship, especially in the harsh Pennine winters. Hannah had to work outside tending her few cattle in ragged clothes with temperatures well below freezing. In 1972, Hannah became the subject of a TV documentary called Too Long a Winter and after the first episode was shown with Hannah leading a cow into a shed during blizzard conditions, Yorkshire TV's phone line was jammed for 3 days with viewers offering help and gifts. A local factory raised funds to have electricity installed at her farm and she continued to receive gifts and donations from around the globe. In the late 80s, a 2nd series called A Winter too Many showed Hannah still working the land at Low Birk Hatt but her health and strength was slowly failing. After eventually selling her beloved farm, Hannah moved to a little cottage in Cotherstone which can be seen to the right of the Red Lion Pub and has a Blue Plaque marking the cottage. Hannah eventually died in 2018 and is buried in nearby Romalkirk Cemetery. An amazing woman who in her words, 'lived in the summer and existed in the winter'.
The geocache is hidden in the remains of Balder Corn Mill would have been running when Hannah's parents were working the farm.
