This could be described as a "drive by virtual", in other words a easy "find". But it is a important site in Charleston's History.
You may have driven close by here from time to time and wondered "whazzat". In 1998 The Charleston Museum celebrated its 225th anniversary! It is the oldest museum in the United States and was once located on Chalmers street. The collonade you are looking at once was the facade of the old Museum. It had two wings and was constructed in 90 days in 1899 to house a auditorium. The building was given to the city for use as a museum in 1907. It was a temporary building but it did last until the new Museum opened in the 1970's. All exhibits were finally removed in 1982 just two months before the fire of October 17th!
To score your find. E-mail us with the number of standing columns and the number of destroyed columns. (Don't post your answers here.)
The name of the park is Cannon Park and is a great place for a cool picnic. Let the kids put on a show for you! Again enjoy one of Charleston's "forgotten places!"
