Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, often referred to as TUFS, is a specialist research university in Fuchū, Tokyo, Japan. TUFS is primarily devoted to foreign language, international affairs and foreign studies. It also features an Asia-African institution.
The University is the oldest academic institution devoted to international studies in Japan. It began as Institute for Research of Foreign Documents, a Tokugawa shougunate's translation bureau set up in 1857.
It was subsequently established as an independent educational and research institution with the name Tokyo School of Foreign Languages in 1899.
In 1999, the University celebrated both the 126th anniversary of its original establishment and the 100th anniversary of its independence. The campus was moved to its present location, where students can study in a modern, hi-tech environment.

東京外国語大学（とうきょうがいこくごだいがく、東京都府中市朝日町3-11-1に本部を置く日本の国立大学である。1949年に設置された。大学の略称は外語大（がいごだい）や外大、東京外大、東外大などで、英語ではTUFSと呼ばれる。
旧制東京外国語学校を前身とする大学である。東京大学、一橋大学と同じ起源を持ち、また旧大阪外国語大学（現・大阪大学外国語学部）とは姉妹校に当たる。
学部は、2012年3月まで、7課程26専攻を設置する外国語学部 (Faculty of Foreign Studies) のみだったが、2012年4月に改組され、2012年度入学生からは言語文化学部もしくは国際社会学部の所属となっている。専攻の言語や専攻言語に関する地域の文化に加えて人文・社会科学、さらに自然科学（おもに情報科学）を学ぶことができる。2012年4月以降改編された学部では、言語文化学部は言語教育を重視し、国際社会学部は言語以外の教育に重きを置くカリキュラムとなっている。
大学院は、教育組織として総合国際学研究科 (Graduate School of Global Studies) が設置されており、そこでは博士前期課程（4専攻）と博士後期課程（2専攻）が設置されている。
