Geocache Description:

The church of Agios Eutychios lies in the deserted settlement Metochi Perdiki near the village of Chromonastiri. The only reference of the church in the written sources is in the Venetian Census of 1637.Pottery finds indicate that the area was in use from 3rd century A.D. However, the earliest architectural remains unearthed during excavation and specifically a rectangular building oriented east- west, with no apse, could be dated to the early byzantine period (late 6th- early 17th century). In the middle byzantine period. On the same site was erected the church of Agios Eutychios, using the north and south walls of the earlier building. The eastern wall with the sanctuary apse was built 1,5m to the north of the eastern wall of the earlier building. Typologically the church belongs to a rare variation of the compressed eight style - cross in square church with a dome. Frescoes are only preserved on the sanctuary apse. The half-dome of the apse is adorned with the Deesis and the half cylinder with frontal bishops in two rows. The wall paintings are dated to the 11th century and are typical of the current provincial byzantine painting. Of special interest is the fragmentary preserved pebble floor, as well as the arched niches of the eastern wall, which are covered with a coating that imitates rows of bricks and stones. During the Ottoman Occupation, probably in the 18th century, the church was converted to a residence. The facade of the north cross arm was rebuilt as the main entrance, while a brick oven was constructed in the interior of the church. The Project Eumathios- Philokales Promotion of the selected Middle Byzantine monuments of Crete and Cyprus with innovative methods, was completed between the years 2011-2013, within the frame work of the Cross border Cooperation Program "Greece- Cyprus 2007-2013". It included the entire restoration of the church, the excavation in the building and in the surrounding area, and the conservation of the wall paintings.
