Geocache Description:

A multi cache celebrating the legendary history of HMAS AE2

The Silent ANZAC

HMAS AE2 was an E-class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), which along with her sister submarine the AE1, were the very first submarines commissioned by the RAN.

Known as the “silent ANZAC”, HMAS AE2 was pressed into service at the start of World War I. She was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles Strait to the Marmara Sea in 1915, on the very morning ANZAC Soldiers landed at Gallipoli, and also became the first RAN warship to conduct a torpedo attack against an enemy warship. After harassing Turkish shipping in the Sea of Marmara, the AE2 succumbed to the Turkish torpedo boat Sultanhisar, and was scuttled by the crew. The submarine lay undetected until a team located the submarine in June 1998, lying in 72 metres of water.

Welcome to Ruth Whitfield Park, the site of the HMAS AE2 Memorial. This park has shady trees, nice lawns, a kids playground, a large BMX track, and other caches nearby. A detailed replica of the AE2 resides here, along with a memorial plaque outlining the history of the submarine. The official unveiling ceremony was performed on April 30 this year, the same date that the AE2 was scuttled in 1915. Enjoy hunting this multi after taking some time to reflect on the amazing feats of such daring men, who were pioneers at a time when the machinery, tactics and equipment they used were in their absolute infancy.

Answer the following questions from the memorial at Waypoint 1 to find the Waypoint 2 co-ordinates. It is the decimal portion of the co-ordinates you seek, i.e.  S 27 15.ABC   E 152 58.DEF

The Sultanhisar had a crew of how many? 1 A

What was the beam of the AE2? B .9m

How many blades are on the AE2’s two propellers? C

On the Starboard depth indicators of the AE2 replica, D is the Roman numeral second from the bottom, converted to a single numerical digit

How many crew members did the AE2 carry? E 2

How many crew members lost their lives when the AE2 was scuttled and the crew surrendered? F

Using your new co-ordinates, travel to Waypoint 2, where you will find a tall structure bearing 6 digits, in the order PQRSTU.

Waypoint 3 is the resting place of the cache, and can be found at:

 S 27 15.T (R + S) (R + U)     E 152 58.(P + T) (P + Q) R

Please note some stealth may be required if you visit the park when during busy periods.

First to Find receives an FTF pennant and a souvenir FTF wooden coin.

Good luck intrepid explorers!

Congrats to Teamtinda, barbbowman and FastEd 59 for being FTF despite trying circumstances!
