Tasman Glacier Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

nandor: The keas have won, I'm not going to reinstate this geocache.
Don't let that be an excuse to stay away though, this area of NZ is like none-other. Enjoy!

Geocache Description:

Short Description:

Cache is located nearby a shelter overlooking the spectacular Tasman Glacier.

Accessibility Details:

You may park your car at S43 41.881 E170 09.811 (8.3km walk to the cache) or if you have a 4WD you may continue up the 4WD road 'till you come to a large boulder which blocks the road. The large rock is ~4km up the road leaving around ~4km more walk to the cache. The road is very rough - 4WD cars are probably not suitable although the road up to the boulder is great for mountainbiking. When the cache was laid, we drove to the big rock, then mountainbiked to the cache site and back. From the big rock 4km in, the track becomes very rough and even though we managed to ride some sections of the track, it would've been just as fast/easier to walk without them! There are a couple of exposed sections along the track which you'll need to take care on - there's one part where you need to climb down a ~10m bank. The weather in this environment can change very fast. You should take spare warm clothing, a good jacket, gloves and boots - especially in winter. Food and drink should also be taken as well. Please check the location of this geocache on a map before attempting. When walking from the first (main) carpark, you should allow a full day to get into the cache and back out or 4-6 hours if mountainbiking. I've checked with DOC - mountainbikes are allowed on the track and 4WD vehicles are permitted up to the rock which blocks the road. When we laid the cache we were biking in fresh snow!

Container:

It is a translucent 1.3L snap-lock container. The cache is covered in rocks. I had to completely cover the cache due to the large number of people who visit this area. It should be out of reach from rogue avalanches in winter!

Contents:

When laid, the cache contained:
  • Mini water pistols
  • Fart whistle
  • Cup hooks (From Ryde Comes Before A Fall Cache!)

Final Comments:

This cache site sits amongst some of the most spectacular and rugged terrain in New Zealand - a visit to this incredible place is worth the effort. I endeavour to get some photos up on this site once I have my film developed. The ride back out the 4WD road from the big rock is primo!

Be careful, be prepared, Good luck!
