Alexander Hamilton was a founding father of the United States, chief staff aide to General George Washington, one of the most influential interpreters and promoters of the U.S. Constitution, the founder of the nation's financial system, and the founder of the first American political party.

Hamilton attended school in nearby Elizabethtown, New Jersey, and came under the influence of William Livingston, a leading intellectual and revolutionary, with whom he lived for a time at his Liberty Hall. Hamilton was an officer in the American Revolutionary War. At the start of the war, he organized an artillery company and was chosen as its captain. He later became the senior staff aide and confidant to General George Washington. At the Siege of Yorktown, Hamilton commanded three light infantry battalions, in the victorious concluding battle of the war.

Hamilton later served as a New York delegate to the Constitutional Convention, and was active in the successful campaign for its ratification by New York, which was a crucial step in its national ratification.

President George Washington appointed Hamilton as the first United States Secretary of the Treasury, where he suggested that Congress charter a National Bank and create a National Mint. By the time of the American Civil War, Hamilton's portrait began to appear on US currency. His portrait has continued to appear on US postage and currency, and most notably appears on the modern $10 bill.
