Geocache Description:

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among other inventions.

Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity; as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies, then as the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation.

During our lives, all of us have to walk a fine line between our own beliefs and the beliefs of our family and peers. As was the case for many people at the time, Franklin’s personal life was literally torn apart by the American War of Independence. His son, William Franklin was the last Colonial Governor of New Jersey, and a steadfast Loyalist. The political differences between father and son caused an irreconcilable break between them.
