Finnish activities #3
20% of the population in Upplands Väsby is Swedenfinnish. This means they are Finns living in Sweden. This series of caches introduce you to Finnish activities, some more crazy than others!
Fishing
In a country called “the land of 1000 lakes” one of the most popular hobbies is fishing. But in reality fishing is not really a hobby or a sport. In Finland every catch is a potential meal. Many Finns have their own lake- or seaside cabins where they spend a lot of time all year around. Others just head for the nearest lake, seashore or river to try their luck. Finns will gather, hunt and fish everything edible. Nothing should go to waste! This is a mentality grown in the times of war (against Soviet Union in 1939-1940 and 1941-1944), when people were starving. All edible berries and mushroom are picked during summer and autumn. Hunting seasons are respected. Fishing is going on all year round. In winter ice fishing is very popular.
