Geocache Description:

One of the things I love about Geocaching is all the great places it brings you to that you wouldn't have visited otherwise. Included in these places are all of these tiny cemetery plots scattered about around the city that I find very intriguing and often have a lot of interesting history behind them. Many great hides around the 5 boros such as The Smallest Cemetery, Remsen Cemetery, The Garden of Eden and Historic Gravesend will bring you to some of these spots.

This cache will bring you to Old New Utrecht Cemetery. The Old New Utrecht Cemetery's earliest recorded burial was in 1654. Approximately 1300 dead are interred here including members of such notable families as the Van Pelts, Van Brunts, Cropseys, Cowenhovens and Bennetts. There is a communal plot for Revolutionary War soldiers and a section where free and slave individuals of African descent were buried. The monuments, which are in dire need of restoration, are some of the finest examples of their time. In 1916 The Daughters of The American Revolution dedicated a monument to General Nathaniel Woodhull. Some more reading about the cemetery and other great historical locations around the town formerly known as "Utrecht", todays Bensonhurst, can be found here:

Cache is NOT located inside the cemetery or on the property of any house. Block is residential so watch for muggles. Although the container is micro it can fit some very small items such as geocoins or TB dog tags. BYOP and please as always, make sure cover is closed tightly and rehide as found.
