This mystery/puzzle cache is our third and follows in the footsteps of Orange Roads and Yellow Roads
Love them or loathe them, the UK’s Motorways are a vital part of our transport infrastructure.
Over 2,200 miles of motorway network carry around a third of all road traffic annually. Nearly a hundred motorway services cater for hungry, tired and leg-crossed travellers. Smart ‘managed’ motorways with automated traffic control including variable speed-limits, all-lane running (dynamic hard shoulder) and continuous CCTV monitoring are the next step in increasing capacity and improving journey times.
This puzzle cache is all about research and then some (simple) maths. Hopefully you’ll learn a few new facts and have fun en-route.
- 1. Britain’s first motorway, now part of the M6, was opened on December 5, ABCD.
- 2. The longest uninterrupted stretch of motorway is over 15 miles - between junctions E and F of the MGH.
- 3. There is no junction I on the M1.
- 4. Britain's longest motorway is the MJ.
- 5. When opened, the MKL was the world's longest ring road.
- 6. The MMN is Britain's highest motorway.
- 7. The cities of London and Manchester are the only cities in England with one motorway encircling them completely (the M25 and M60 respectively). Birmingham also has an orbital motorway network, but using three motorways: the M6, M42 and the MO.
- 8. Junction P/Q of the MR has a unique double junction number.
- 9. When opened in 1966, the first toll bridge was on the MS.
