The early history of Riverhead saw activities such as forestry, gum digging, flax cutting and flour milling.
Riverhead
About 1870 Riverhead gained some prominence as a transit point for travelers heading to (or from) Northland. Ferries from Auckland would dock close by the 'Riverhead' tavern, formally known as 'Deacons Hotel'. Thereafter following refreshment, no doubt of a convivial nature, the journey would continue. For a time Cobb & Co ran a regular four horse coach service to Helensville with an overnight stop at ‘The Halfway House’ in Waikoukou, but this was discontinued when the railway line was completed linking Riverhead with Kumeu and thence to Helensville. On completion of the North Auckland railway line section connecting Kumeu with Auckland in 1875, the former route via Riverhead was no longer viable as a means of transportation and the railway to Riverhead was closed.
Later activities in the Riverhead area saw the growth of a tobacco growing and processing industry. In the 1920’s ‘The National Tobacco Company’ produced a range of products as shown in image below.
The veracity of the statements above might be called into question by present day health authorities:
“DOES NOT INJURE HEART, LUNGS OR THROAT”
“MEDICAL AUTHORITIES RECOMMEND IT”
Present day Riverhead offers the opportunity to indulge in a little bit of relaxation and sustenance may be found at the nearby establishments:
1. The Riverhead Tavern
2. Hallertau restaurant
3. Kauri Gum Country Store and Café
