Geocache Description:

Our first ever cache, we hope you like it and the location.  Parking is available quite close by, either just off the road or slightly further into town on the roadside.  May require stealth in Summer or at busy times due to muggles.

The cache is situated in a beautiful spot next to the river Thet and close to Melford Bridge.  The bridge was built in 1697, although there has been a bridge here for much longer, and has been grade II listed since April 1951.  The bridge was paid for by Sir John Wodehouse, a Tory Member of Parliament, who was elected to the House of Commons for Thetford.

The upstream side of the central pilaster has a stone plaque bearing the Wodehouse arms and an inscription in latin reading “Hie pons sumptibus Johannis Wodehouse Bt. Extructus fuit A.D. 1697. Qui bono publico optime consuluit”.

Castle Street, over the new bridge, leads in to Thetford town centre and is bordered by an avenue of horse chestnuts and limes, planted as a reminder of the Coronation of King Edward VII.  On the right hand side of the road is Melford Common which is a great space for children to play and to walk dogs.  Closer to town on the left hand side of the road is Castle Park and Castle Mound (the remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle) which has a long history as far back as the 11th century.

This is a really beautiful part of Thetford and well worth a visit on the way in to the town centre.

Following the original cache being muggled, we have now placed this smaller one in a slightly more secluded spot. No space for TBs or swappables and please bring your own pen.
