Ira M Luther traversed this pass in a covered wagon and created a path for the Central Pacific RXR here, but was later rejected.... In 1860, the Pony Express used this pass coming from Placerville to Lake Valley to Woodfords and onward into Nevada, but the route was also quickly changed to Kingsbury Grade...........

...........to come over this pass into Hope Valley or the Lake Tahoe basin is very scenic

 especially in the fall when the leaves are changing.....The wetland on this pass is the highest

in the country.................
