This cache is located on the newest part of the west shore trail and happens to be our very first cache plant.
Onondaga Lake has a rich history that includes its role in industry and recreation. The turn of the 19th century marked the beginning of the city’s infamous salt industry, which would not have been the same without the lake at its epicenter. Several decades later, there was a transition from industry to entertainment and recreation. During the Golden Age of the lake, the west shore was known for its beaches, amusement park and resorts. Use of these attractions declined in the early 1900’s due to the emergence of the automobile that allowed Syracuse residents easier access to more exotic vacation destinations. Over time the resorts, parks and beaches were deserted, and little evidence on shore remains today to indicate that these grand attractions once stood. Many people walk the west shore trail but few realize that history from the last 200 years lies just below the surface of the murky water. There are over 20 vessels under the waters of Onondaga Lake that have been identified including barges, canal boats, tug boats, ice boats, remnants of piers from Rockaway Beach and Pleasant Beach and even an airforce jet. We hope that this cache will motivate people to learn even more about the lakes history and to become invested in returning the lake to its former glory.
