Geocache Description:

The pueblo, El Quartelejo, is the only Indian pueblo discovered in Kansas and the northern most in North America.  Taos Native Americans migrated here fleeing Spanish rule.  They constructed pueblos and cultivated crops using a system of irrigation ditches from a nearby spring.  They remained for about 20 years.  El Quartelejo, meaning "Old barracks or building" was reoccupied by the Picuris Indians for 2 years.  The structures deteriorated and disappeared leaving only a mound and some irrigation ditches.  The present site has been reconstructed.  There is plenty of parking and a sidewalk to the pueblo ruins. The cache is close by but not accessible from the sidewalk.  You will not need to cross the ruins fence.

Please respect this area and happy caching.
