Kentucky Lake Drive Overlook

The Kentucky Lake Drive Overlook is located at the west entrance of the Barkley Canal, which connects Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.  It has ample parking and a couple of picnic tables.  It has a great view of Kentucky Lake, Kentucky Dam, and Barkley Canal spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Kentucky Lake was created in 1944 with the impoundment of the Tennessee River by the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kentucky Dam at Gilbertsville. The 160,309-acre (649 km2) lake is the largest artificial lake by surface area in the United States east of the Mississippi River (though not the largest by volume; Lake Cumberland holds that distinction).  It provides a source for hydro-electric power and, as one of the lakes alluded to by the name of Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area, is a recreational magnet in western Kentucky and Tennessee.

Lake Barkley was created in 1966 with the impoundment of the Cumberland River by the U.S. army Corps of Engineer's Barkley Dam at Grand Rivers.  Both the lake and the dam are named for Vice President Alben Barkley, a western Kentucky native. Lake Barkley is 134 miles long with a shoreline measuring 1,004 miles.  The lake's level is maintained at different levels throughout the year for flood control and hydroelectric purposes. It borders the eastern side of Land Between the Lakes NRA.

Kentucky and Barkley Lakes are connected by the Barkley Canal. The canal is located in Grand Rivers and is 1.75 miles in length. The canal provides a navigable channel for both commerce and recreation craft moving on the two waterways.

The Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area is a United States National Recreation Area located in Kentucky and Tennessee between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. The area was designated a national recreation area by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The recreation area was originally managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority but jurisdiction has since been transferred to the United States Forest Service.
