Once utilised as a range crossing, the Staircase Range Cutting is well worth a visit when travelling between Springsure and Rolleston. With picnic tables, fire places and ample room to turn a towing vehicle, it makes a great little rest spot. The Cutting, carved from sandstone around 1905 by Chinese labour using only hand tools, is an easy 100m walk from the car park. During the wet season, the falls are also quite impressive to see.
The cache is located a slight way off the track, so please be wary of snakes, this is a rocky bushland area.
During rainy weather, the road may become too muddy for a 2WD vehicle, always drive to conditions!
The turn off comes up quickly from both directions and you do have to drive a little way before it becomes safe to turn around, so when you get close, keep an eye out for 'Historical Site' signs.
