Another one of Piha’s many gems is the interestingly named Piha Blowhole. This is so named because with a big swell and at high tide, this thing can make a lot of noise. Exercise caution.
At low tide one can walk around from Piha on the beach. At high tide, great views can be gained by walking the steep track from the Southern-most end of Piha. There is a track that leads up from the cache to what were known as The Tennis Courts. These were so named because at the time there was an area the size of two tennis courts covered in dense, flat vegetation resembling the manicured grass of a rich person’s tennis court in Remuera. It now has higher vegetation on it. Take care of the CLIFFS. By the beach is a steep track that takes you up to Fisherman’s Rock. How many of them must there be in NZ alone?! Take care, CLIFFS. The Gap is the unmistakable gap between the island and Fisherman’s Rock. Walking up Taitomo Island gives a much more impressive view of thunderous waves in The Gap. Lifeguards sometimes swim out here and then back to Piha as training. Do not do this. If you walked around the beach, you may have noticed the remains of Dr. Finlay’s Boatshed. More info here: http://www.piha.co.nz/dr-finlays-boatshed/ From http://www.piha.co.nz/the-gap/: “Blowhole Bay was where tourists originally came when visiting Piha, as it was easier to access than Piha itself. At low tide they walked around to Piha itself.” Cache is an approx. 400ml container with minimal camouflage.
