Blue Dog Gone Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ace-357: Today I got the replacement cache, but when I arrived at GZ, not only was the blue dog cache as totally gone as the original Blue Dog, the hiding place was gone as well. :(

I will wait until spring, then find a totally new place for my new tribute to the Blue Dog. Thanks to all who visited, and especially thank you to all who gave it a favorite point!

Geocache Description:

Please be VERY gentle while retrieving and replacing this cache. Bring your own pen/pencil. And stay on the public roadside area -- the far side of the ditch is private, and there is no reason to go there.

Look south -- see the barn? In the early years of this century, this barn was a local landmark. The north side of the barn was completely covered by a painting of a blue dog, designed by American artist George Rodrigue (1944-2013). The blue dog barn was featured on the cover of the local telephone book, and people all over the area slowed down when driving by to see the dog.

The blue dog image was actually part of a nationwide advertising campaign in 2000, but there was no corporate logo or other advertising on the barn, and passersby smiled at the dog without any connection with the product it was briefly supposed to promote.

The ad campaign was short-lived (less than a year), but the blue dog barn continued to charm travelers for another decade. Eventually, alas, it was painted over, possibly because the barn really needed a new coat of paint. But those of us who loved the blue dog still grin as we drive by.

Please be extremely careful when removing and replacing the cache. And don't look for it when muggles are in the area. They will not be around for long, and stealth may be physically impossible with this cache. The difficulty rating is based in part on the difficulty of retrieving the cache after you find it.

The road this cache is on has a different name than the one shown on the accompanying map. The signpost labels the road "McKay Rd."

*****Congratulations to gr8xpec for the FTF. I'm glad it went to someone who remembered the dog!*****
