Geocache Description:

This is an adventure using your gps. We have collaborated with Ranger Fox to give you an opportunity to play Whack-a-Viking and then to find a cache. You will need to play the game on Vikings level to get the co-ordinates. Download your Wherigo cartridge here.

The battle of Ethandun (Edington) is purported to have taken place in this area in 878 AD. Alfred the Great, the only British King to be called Great, battled with Guthrum and his army of Danes. Alfred eventually drove the Danes northwards and came to the agreement with them which became Danelaw.

On 5th January 878, Alfred and his army suffered defeat by the Vikings in Chippenham, where he had been spending Christmas.

The Danes appear to have been Hell bent on driving the Saxons to surrender, submit to Viking culture and to become slaves. Alfred ran in defeat and hid in Somerset until the heat died down.

Guthrum, the Viking leader, played a waiting game, thinking Alfred dead. He set up camp in Alfreds' estate, in Chippenham.

When Alfred and his supporters had regrouped he set out to oust the Danes from Chippenham, and indeed the area.

Here, at Ethundun, is where Guthrum sent his men to halt Alfred's approach.

Your quest is to support Alfred and beat the Vikings on the battlefield. With each duel you will gain points. Your score will increase as you succeed in defeating the foe and, eventually, you will be given the co-ordinates for the cache.

So, put your armour on, get set for battle and Good Luck! Be quick now!The game has been tested on Garmin Oregon and iPhone. You need to be quick to catch them in the time you have been given. Download the Wherigo cartridge here. Don't forget to log your completion code on Whack-a-Viking.
