With the recent popular rise of MMA and its associated arts (jujitsu, tae kwon do, wrestling, muay thai, karate, etc), we tend to miss out on some of the less common martial arts, including the arts that involve use of martial arts weaponry. This cache stands to call focus onto the martial art that is modern swordfighting.
Modern olympic swordfighting uses one of 3 common weapons, each having their own unique attributes, and varying rules during play:
Foil: The foil is a thrusting weapon that targets the torso, neck, back, and groin, but not the arms or legs. Touches are scored by contact with the tip only. Hits from the side of the blade are not counted and do not stop play. Touches landing outside the target area stop action, but are not scored. Foil style fighting is the most common of the 3 in modern days.
Epee: The epee is a thrusting weapon, like the foil, but is much heavier and is used to target the entire body. Like foil fighting, points are scored by contact with the tip, as the sides of the blade are not valid.
Sabre: A cutting and thrusting weapon, the sabre targets the entire body above the waist, with the exception of the weapon hand. Hits with the point, or any portion of the blade are valid.
Surely adding weapons to modern MMA would be a huge mistake, but in individualized competitions it can make for a fascinating sport.
This particular cache has no real good parking nearby, so I'd consider planning for it while taking a walk on one of the nice nearby trails. If you're looking to somewhat PNG this one, you will have to park streetside on a nearby residential street and walk out to it. Please be respectful when going through intersections as we have lots of walkers around these neighborhoods.
