Camp Ashby in the Thalia community of Princess Anne County
was the largest Prisoner of War camp in
South Hampton Roads during World War II.
It housed many of Adolf Hitler’s elite Afrika Korps
Which had been led by Field Marshall Rommel. By the end of the War,
more than 6,000 German prisoners of war were imprisoned at Camp Ashby.
Camp Ashby was erected quickly on land leased from the state.
At the time, the property’s most dominate feature was the
Tidewater Victory Memorial Hospital, a tuberculosis sanitarium
At Virginia Beach Boulevard and Thalia Road.
The camp’s low-slung barracks were scattered across
acres of woods and field north of the present main branch of the
Virginia Beach Central Library and Loehman’s Plaza shopping center.
The original hospital is now part of the Willis Wayside Furniture complex.
Several barrack buildings were converted and are private residences.
