This caboose was built in 1946 at Fisher Hill shop Mineville, NY. It is constructed from an iron ore car and weighs 16 tons. the Lake Champlain and Moriah Railroad used this caboose on the main line from Mineville to Port Henry to haul Iron Ore from 1946-1972. The first iron ore mill was first built in Port Henry in 1766.
This cache is the first cache placed in the Town of Moriah that is connected to the towns history. There is plenty of parking near by since this cache is located at the train station in Port Henry. There isn't too much activity around except for an occasional train passing through. The holiday train stops here every year and brings a lot of people from the surrounding area. There is also the Iron Center Museum that goes in more depth of the railroad and mining history if you are a history buff.
