Motte and Bailey castles were introduced by the Normans during their invasion in the eleventh century. They are basically just castles built on hills, surrounded by a few other buildings. The Motte is the artificial mound of earth with the castle on top, whilst the Bailey is the rest of it. All that remains of Gilmorton Motte and Bailey is the mound, surrounded by a wide ditch. During the winter months it is popular with the local kids as a place to go sledging (a rather pathetic one, if you ask me!).
The cache itself is a small novelty container that contains only the log so please bring your own writing implement. It is located at a hawthorn tree on the side of the Motte. Please replace the cache well, but not so far into its hidey hole that nobody can retrieve it!
The area around the Motte is usually fine to walk on but during the colder months it can get very muddy; the terrain rating reflects this.
Parking is available in the village, but I recommend that you do not park on Church Lane (the closest road) as it gets very tight down there, especially during church services.
Sorry, but this cache is unlikely to be suitable for disabled cachers.
The landowner has kindly given permission for cachers to search here.
Happy Hunting!
