These insects are famous for their catastrophic invasions as mentioned in the Bible as the 8th plague. There are about 10,000 species grouped into 10 families The biblical locust was the Desert Locust and has been threatening agriculture in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and up to India for centuries.
Locusts can jump 70cm and is likened to humans jumping 18m
Locusts and grasshoppers are closely related and have similiar looks and habits - so whats the differences?
a) locusts have short antennae and grasshoppers very long ones,
b) locusts generally are gregarious and grasshoppers are solitary individuals
c) locusts have short ovipositors and egg capsules, whereas grasshoppers use their long sword-like ones to deposit eggs.
The first ever drawn insect on record was a locust, on a bison bone, about 10,000 years ago, which was found in a cave in France.
BUT....... this is a grasshopper and not a nasty plague-guilty biblical brown specimen!!!!!
