On 6th June 2000 ‘steve’ hid Englands first ever geocache. Jeremy Irish (who later founded geocaching.com) was so happy he sent steve a very special gift. Rumor has it that it was a cache made of solid gold.

The story goes that in late September 2000 a flight left Seattle carrying the special cache, destined for Kenley Airfield where the plane had been given very special permission to land. Security was very tight on the aircraft, with the cache being kept in a safe, and the key kept separate.
It was a dark and stormy night when the plane came into land at Kenley. Eyewitnesses recall the plane overshooting the runway and crashing into woodland, taking down a large ivy covered tree.
Despite numerous searches, the golden cache has never been recovered, causing many to question whether it ever existed at all, dismissing the entire story as a myth.
At the time of writing, Groundspeak could neither confirm or deny the existence of a golden geocache.
