Geocache Description:

To search for this cache, you will need to ENTER THE CEMETERY.  Do NOT park along either of the highways that go by 2 sides, even if it seems closer to the cache.  There are plenty of paved roads to drive on in the cemetery.  Park your vehicle so others will be able to pass and walk to the cache site.  Exercise is what Geo-caching is all about, and you might find something interesting along the way.  Enjoy!!!

This beautiful cemetery is about a mile from the Mississippi River.  It is located on the rolling hills on the bluff.  Many loved ones are buried here and much history is to be found on the tombstones.  It's a quiet, peaceful place to take a stroll.  Please show the respect expected in cemeteries.  The hours to search for this cache would be from Dawn to Dusk.  If someone is visiting a grave or a service is in progress close to the cache location, please come back later or walk around until they leave.  I enjoy going to cemeteries while I can still Stand on the grass. I hope that you do, also.

This cache is located close to "The Governor Bond State Memorial".  The memorial marks the grave of Shadrach Bond, the first governor of Illinois after it attained statehood in 1818.  Bond was born in Maryland and settled in Monroe County, Illinois in 1794.  He served in several territorial positions and as an Illinois Territory delegate to the United States House of Representatives from 1812 to 1814.  During his term as governor, the State Bank of Illinois was chartered and the capital was moved from Kaskaskia to Vandalia.  The obelisk style monument was erected in 1883.  The monument was destroyed by a storm in 2008.  It was repaired and rededicated in 2014.
